Charlotte + Dax | Port St Lucie Engagement

It is that time of year.  While sessions get to be tricky because of tropical rain patterns, you can feel the light changing.  It is subtle.  The harshness of the sun is a little softer.  Fall in Florida is even more subtle.  Who are we kidding, we really don’t have seasons.  “Fall” for me is football, pumpkin everything, and peak hurricane season.  It is also a busier time of the year for engagement sessions for upcoming spring weddings and lots of family sessions.

I am so excited to shoot Charlotte and Dax’s wedding at Kai Kai Farms.  It will be my first wedding there and is right up my alley, just like their engagement session was.  White City Park reminds me of Central Florida, where I grew up.  Moss draped Oaks, Palmettos, Cypress Trees, Cabbage Palms and dirt roads.

Finding Community over Competition in an overly Competitive World | South Florida Photographer

The phrase Community over Competition may sound contradictory.  After all, if you do what I do, it is my job to get the business and not you.  So, I guess we can’t all be friends then, right?  That sounds and actually is very lonely.

Georgia Photographer

Let me take you back to fall 2015.  It was my second year at the Pursuit 31 conference at the amazing Winshape Retreat Center in Rome, Georgia.  (Here is my recap from the 2014 conference.)  It was the last day of the retreat.  I was sitting at a large table with several other ladies, some of whom I did not know.  Somehow we all began talking about how lonely the business was.  I shared that I had reached out to other local photographers and was totally brushed off.  I felt like I had no friend photographers or other creatives in our business.  Then, one of the girls (Natalie Franke) asked me if I had heard of The Rising Tide Society.  She then shared her story, (check it out here) which resonated with me so deeply.  I was so excited to learn more!

The closest Tuesdays Together group was 45 minutes from my home.  I lobbied for a group in my area but I couldn’t get an approval.  So, I attended the very first West Palm Beach Tuesdays Together In February 2016.

Rising Tide society

It has been 2 1/2 years since that first meeting, and while I still feel like it is a struggle to find authentic relationships in the business, I am incredibly thankful for the friends I have made through Tuesdays Together.  Our group is small, but our regular attenders are amazing and completely epitomize RTS’s philosophies.  I still find many who do not really get it. They are scared to let others in, share their business knowledge, or weaknesses, or are just looking to see how it can benefit them.   But you see, this is the secret.  We grow our businesses alongside each other.  We can encourage and cheer each other on!  Our monthly guides are packed with relevant business topics from leaders throughout the creative industry.  We help each other grow more profitable businesses so that we may thrive in our industry.

“We believe that when creatives rise, the world is changed for the better. Together, we are empowering the creative economy to pursue their passion with the support of a community.”  RTS  Rising Tide Society believes in building community through relationships.

I am so very thankful I sat at that particular table that day.  Thank you Natalie for encouraging me.  I doubt you remember, but I will never forget.  Being a creative entrepreneur and small business owner is hard more often than it is not.  But it helps when you have others who help champion you on and truly want you to succeed.

Would you like to know more about The Rising Tide Society?  Check them out here.  Are you a local creative business owner looking for a local chapter near you?  Find one here or here.

Stay tuned, I will be sharing why I chose Honeybook and how it is working for me.

Julia + Jason

Pietros on the River Intimate Wedding

There is something very special about small intimate weddings.  They have a different feel.  Your closest family and friends.  We aint talking facebook friends but the ones you do everyday life with.  We had to wait until the severe weather passed to get started.  We escaped the rain, but the wind was crazy!  Julia and Jason took it in stride and totally trusted me with their photos.

I have to share what brought these two together.  It was pool.  Not the kind you take a dip in on a hot summer day, but billiards.  I think that makes them so cool.  Just sayin’.  They were pretty sweet too and make a beautiful couple.

Planning Wedding Day Hair and Makeup | Palm Beach Wedding Photographer

Planning Wedding Day Hair and Makeup

There are so many things to consider when planning your wedding day.  Not planning adequately for wedding day hair and makeup is one the most common reasons weddings run late.  It also makes people crazy and rush around and that just kills joy (as my 8 year old says).

Hire a Professional

There is something to be said for hiring professionals who make their living doing what they do.  Here are a few tips when considering and planning wedding day hair and makeup.

  • Give it a test run.  It is important to ensure that your vision is your hair and make up artist’s vision as well.  The best way to guarantee you get a look you will love on your wedding day is to see it executed….on you!  Not only that, you can take it for a spin to see how it wears.  Here in South Florida, we can get a lot of breezy days, especially beachside.  You should take that into consideration and have an updo as a backup if windy weather is the forecast.

Palm Beach Wedding PhotographerWedding Day HairThe Knot Florida

This bride planned for two hair style variations for her wedding day.  The ceremony and reception was on the beach, so wind was a consideration.  It ended up being pretty breezy, but her hair looked beautiful the entire day thanks to Vanessa at Makeup by Vanessa Crouse.

  • Build time in to your timeline.  This is crucial.  You should allot about 1 & 1/2 hours per person.  This may mean starting early, or having a hair and make up artist who has a team or assistants.  If you (or your bridal party) is getting hair or make up done off site, be sure to double your travel time to allow for any traffic/travel hiccups.
  • Take a moment to enjoy.  There is nothing worse than rushing around at the last minute trying to get photos and get to the ceremony on time.  All hair and make-up should be completed at least 2 hours prior to ceremony, 3 hours if there is a first look.  This allows time for all of the pre-ceremony shots and for you to relax, smile and enjoy!  It is your wedding day-it should be fun!

Stuart WeddingWith everyone’s hair an makeup done in plenty of time before the ceremony, the girls had time to relax and have fun.  It is possible to do on your wedding day.

Sometimes I get to know my clients and then we become friends.  Sometimes, we are friends first.  And that makes the dynamic so much different.  It is extra special.  I had the privilege to be a part of our church’s youth ministry while he was our Youth Pastor.  Sometimes, God calls us to a different ministry or simply a different ministry field.  They heeded that call.  Thankfully, they are not so far away and I was able to spend some time documenting their sweet family.  Time passes by so fast.  From diapers, to toddler-hood, pre-teens, and then they are grown just like that.  It may seem impossible to wrangle four littles for photos, and I promise it may not go smoothly, but I also promise it will be worth it every.single.time!
